On Friday, December 1st, the Erie County Legislature adopted a 2007 County budget that provides $500,000 more in Library support than the County Executive's proposed budget. The County levy for Library purposes will rise from the 2006 level of $21.7 million to $22.2 million in 2007.
Between 2004 and 2005, the Library lost nearly 25% of its funding from Erie County, and funding remained static in 2006. Without doubt, the Library requires much more than $500,000 to address its many needs, but the $500,000 restoration is an encouraging beginning. These additional funds will benefit libraries that failed to meet New York State minimum standards this year and other libraries whose hours of service were reduced to levels that can only be described as unacceptable. Details will be forthcoming.
