Core Course Descriptions
Computer and Mouse Basics
This beginner’s class focuses on what a computer is and how it works. Learn about hardware and select software. You’ll also learn how to hold and move the mouse.
Requirements: None

- Microsoft Word Basics
Get hands-on experience with word processing. Learn how to enter, edit, copy, move, format, save, and print data using Microsoft Word software. No true typing skills are necessary to participate.

- Microsoft Word Intermediate
Use clip art and the drawing toolbar to create a flyer, advertising bulleting, or a certificate!
Requirements:Basic mouse skills, Microsoft Word Basics class or prior experience with Microsoft Word, knowledge of toolbars

- Microsoft Excel Basics
This beginner’s class will focus on how to create spreadsheets with Excel software. You’ll get hands-on experience entering data and formulas, copying and moving data, and formatting. You’ll create a very simple budget using these skills.

- Microsoft Publisher Beginner
Learn to create customized newsletters, brochures, and catalogs through desktop publishing. You’ll create a simple document while learning some of the basics of Publisher.

- Internet Basics
Understand the basic of exploring the Internet. You’ll learn how to use Internet Explorer, a popular Web browser that helps you use the Internet to search for specific Web sites.

- Internet Intermediate
Building off the Basic class, learn more about how to construct a query for a search engine. What are common threats to your computer and how can you defend against them? What about my online privacy? How long do certain search engines retain search queries? Why? Learn how to save information from a Web page so you may print it later.
Requirements: Basic mouse skills, Internet Basics class or prior experience using Internet Explorer.

- e-Mail Basics
If you’ve never used e-mail or if you don’t have your own account, we’ll help you set up a free Web based account that is accessible from any computer with Internet access.

- E-mail Intermediate
How do I send or view attachments? How do I add to my contacts list? How do I use the calendar? You’ll learn how to use these features which are a part of most Web based e-mail providers’ offerings.
Requirements: Basic mouse skills, e-Mail Basics class or knowledge of e-mail. You must have a Web based e-mail account with a user name and password to fully participate.

- Mail Merge
Microsoft Word has a “mail merge” function that works in conjunction with Microsoft Excel to help you create personalized letters and envelope labels.
Requirements: Microsoft Word Basics class, Excel Basics class, or prior experience with these software programs.

- B&ECPL Catalog/My Account features
Does the library have the latest bestseller? You want an audio-book but it’s not at the library closest to you. Save time and gas! Learn how to look up materials online. Order circulating items from one library and have them delivered to another. Bring your library card with PIN (Personal Identification Number) to access full “My Account” features to request library materials.
Requirements: Ability to use Microsoft Internet Explorer. A PIN for access to the “My Account” features (obtain your number from your nearest B&ECP Library) and basic mouse skills. Students should be familiar with the keyboard for minimal typing.

- Google™ It! (Intermediate Level Only)
Google is more than a search engine! Need a map? What’s time is it in Amsterdam? Do you want to track a package? Get beyond Google’s main page and learn what this powerful search tool has to offer!
Requirements: Basic mouse skills, Internet Basics class or previous experience in searching the Internet.

- ResumeMaker Basics
If you’re new to the job market or returning to it, this class is for you! We’ll show you how to use specialized software (ResumeMaker) to create a quality resume. Bring a USB or a floppy disk to save your work.
Requirements: Basic mouse and keyboarding skills, your past employment history, a potential job opening that you’re interested in (not necessary but a good idea), and your educational history (names and addresses of schools attended).

- Power Point Basics
This class introduces Microsoft's presentation software - Power Point. You create slides to be projected on a big screen so your audience can follow along. This is used in businesses and also many churches for songs and other presentations. You will learn how to create and animate individual slides. 2 hours. Basic mouse skills required.

- File Management (Intermediate Level Only)
Do you ever lose anything you've saved to your computer? Can't find that picture you wanted to attach to an email? This class shows how to save files to the computer so you can find them again! Use these skills to arrange your digital photos into album folders or organize other files.
Requirements: Basic mouse skills.
