CREATING A RESUME WITH MICROSOFT WORD

Step 1:
Center align the cursor. Type your name. Skip a line and type your address. Don’t be afraid to add your own touches, but remember to choose a typeface that’s easy to read – a potential employer is sifting through lots of resumes and his eyes are getting tired.

Step 2:
Left alignment of the cursor. Telling the employer what you’re looking for. Don’t just say I want a job so I can make enough money to buy a new car. The objective is the job you want to find.

Objective: A position utilizing my educational and work-related background in accounting and tax preparation

Step 3:
Highlighting your best skills so the employer knows you are qualified and should be interviewed

Summary of Skills and Qualifications:

Speaking, Reading and Writing ability in German – This skill is great, however if the job you’re sending in a resume for isn’t looking for someone with German, put this skill at the end under additional training! You want to keep this section small and pertinent to the job for which you’re applying.

Sell Benefits,
Not Features

Step 4:
Highlighting your history: By calling it experience rather than "Employment" or "Work History", you can include volunteer positions in which you gained valuable skills but for which you were not paid. This is helpful if you are just returning to the job market after full-time parenthood or taking time off to care for an ill family member or friend.

The best way to keep items aligned properly when using Microsoft Word to is create a table. Click the table icon in the shortcut menu, make the table 3 columns wide and l row deep.

Experience:

1996 - 1998 Store Manager Blockbuster Video
2300 Main St.
Buffalo, New York 14221

Make these lines disappear – Go to "Table" drop-down menu, select "Table Properties". In lower right hand corner you’ll find "Borders and Shading". Select "Borders". In upper left-hand corner, select "None"

1990 - 1996 Rental Clerk– see description at http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos117.htm Video Factory

A company’s closing can be turned from disaster to triumph for the job applicant if you use the right marketing techniques!

Here’s a perfect example of a volunteer position, which offered valuable work experience!

Step 5:
Showing your educational achievements. If your educational background is stronger than your work experience, you may wish to list your education first. This is important especially if the job you’re applying for is based on educational qualifications rather than work-related ones.

Give the degree or diploma, the field of study, the year you graduated, and the school you attended.

Education:

Bachelor of Science, Accounting and Business Management, 1998, State University College at Buffalo

Regents Diploma, 1994, School of Business Management and Finance, Lafayette High School, Buffalo, New York

Step 6:
Letting the employer know the extras you’ve accumulated

Additional Training:

Seminar in Business Management, Erie Community College

Currently enrolled in Binder-Conviser Course through the State University of New York at Buffalo on Preparing for the CPA Exam

Step 7:
Have a list available at the time of interview. Include names, company titles, department names, address and phone number with extension. If your school has a career placement office, you may wish to see if they offer reference-holding services.

Step 8:
Always check what your resume looks like before you print it out. Go to the "File" menu and choose "print preview" on the drop-down menu. Job duties should not be listed on the next page if you can help it. Make sure your name appears in the upper right or left hand corner of all pages other than cover page.

The final product should be well ordered, with lots of white space on the page. Your resume should never have misspelled words; so pay attention to any red squiggly lines. Here is the final product:
