Operating System
Software that controls how a computer does its most basic operations: stores files, talks to printers, etc.
The Windows Operating System:
- Controls overall activity of your computer
- Controls your hardware
- Runs your software
- Organizes your information
- Runs multiple programs at the same time
- Shares information between programs
- Represents programs, commands or options visually
- Works easily with a mouse
How does "Windows" work?
Windows programs look alike, including:
- Drop down menus
- Boxes called Windows that open to present options and commands
Windows Desktop
Many useful programs and applications are located on the Desktop. They are represented by icons (a small picture that represents programs/applications loaded on the computer). Examples of icons include:
My Computer: Lets you browse through your computer system.
Network Neighborhood: If you are on a network, displays the other computers.
Recycle Bin:Stores the files you delete and allows you to recover them later. (Not available on Library workstations.)
Start button:
- Start a program (lists all available applications)
- Find documents: Allows quick and easy access to the last 15 files used through "My Recent Documents." (Not available on Library workstations.)

- Properly Shut Down your computer
