COMPUTERS 101


Computer Basics

Skill Level: Basic
Requirements: None
Length: 2 hours
Description: Designed for beginners, this class includes a review of the hardware and software of a computer, an introduction to how to use the mouse and keyboard, and purchasing tips.

Organizing your Computer Files & Folders

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Mouse and typing skills, flash drive (optional)
Length: 2 hours
Description: Do you ever lose anything you've saved to your computer? Can't find that picture you wanted to attach to an email? This class shows how to save files to the computer so you can find them again! Use these skills to arrange your digital photos into album folders or organize other files. This class is based on using a Windows 7 computer.

Microsoft Excel Basics

Description: An introduction to the basic functions of Microsoft Excel, you’ll use a spreadsheet format to create a very simple budget.

Microsoft Excel Intermediate

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Mouse and typing skills, Microsoft Excel Basics class or equivalent
Length: 2 hours
Description: Building off the Excel Basics course, this class will teach you how to customize a spreadsheet through formatting as well as inserting charts.

Microsoft Power Point Basics

Description: This is an introduction to Microsoft's presentation software: Power Point. You’ll learn how to create and animate slides to be projected on a big screen so your audience can follow along.

Microsoft Publisher Basics

Skill Level: Basic

Description: Microsoft Publisher can be used to create customized newsletters, brochures and flyers. You’ll create a greeting card while learning some fundamental functions of Publisher.

Microsoft Word Basics

Description: This is an introduction to the basic functions in Microsoft Word, a word processing program. Practice your typing and mouse skills and learn how to save a document.

Microsoft Word Intermediate

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Mouse and typing skills, Microsoft Word Basics class
Length: 2 hours
Description: Learn how to use the copy and paste functions, insert tables and clip art, and change font type to create a flyer!

Resume Creation with Microsoft Word

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Basic mouse and typing skills, Microsoft Word Basics class or equivalent, Internet Basics class or equivalent. A flash drive is required if you wish to save your resume.
Length: 2 hours
Description: Become familiar with the resume templates available in Microsoft Word. In addition, explore free online resources that offer resume and cover letter advice.

Description: Google is more than a search engine! Need a map? What time is it in Amsterdam? Get beyond Google’s main page and learn what this powerful search tool has to offer!

Editing Digital Photos

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet Skills
Length: 2 Hours
Description: Learn how to make basic adjustments to photos in Pixlr Express and Photoshop Express Editor, which are free image editing websites.

Family History Research with Ancestry Library Edition Database

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet skills, flash drive (optional)
Length: 2 hours
Description: An introduction to tracing your family’s roots with Ancestry Library Edition (ALE), a database available at any Buffalo & Erie County Public Library location. Similar to the popular Ancestry.com website, this database contains collections of vital and original records, including those relating to birth, marriage, death, military service, and immigration.

Google Maps

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet skills
Length: 2 hours
Description: Learn all about the Map utility in Google. Not only does it give turn-by-turn directions by car, bike, or foot, but you can also take virtual "walking tours" of famous places, and get encyclopedic information about these places. Find out how!

Introduction to eBay

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet skills. For an eBay account: an email account (bring your username and password).
Length: 2 hours
Description: This class is for Internet users who would like to learn more about eBay, an online market where you can buy and sell goods. Interested students can register for an eBay account. The instructor will present how to search for goods to purchase or bid on auction-style and how you can start a listing for an item to sell.

Requirements: Mouse, typing, Internet skills, and an email address (must know username and password)
Length: 2 hours
Description: An introduction to streaming and downloading digital music and podcasts using Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes, and Freegal (a free music service from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library). 

Shopping Online (including Safety Tips)

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Mouse, typing, Internet skills, and an email address (must know username and password)
Length: 2 hours
Description: Learn the skills of a savvy online shopper using Amazon, etsy, and other retailers all while keeping your information safe.

eBooks & eReaders

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: B&ECPL Library card, mouse & Internet Skills, e-Device (with USB cord, if applicable) and any usernames and passwords associated with it.
Length: 2 1/2 hours
Description: This workshop is designed as a practical, hands-on introduction to downloading eBooks from the library’s website for use on home computers and other personal electronic devices. The focus will be on the Nook, Kindle and iPad. There will be a demonstration of the steps required to download and activate necessary software, along with tips to effectively search and browse our OverDrive catalog.

Kindle Fire Basics

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Kindle Fire, Amazon account username and password
Length: 2 hours
Description: Learn about the parts of the Kindle Fire, understand how to use the touch screen, settings, and keyboard and discover how to download and use common Apps.

 iPad Basics

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: iPad, Apple ID and Password
Length: 2 hours
Description: Learn about the parts of the iPad, understand how to use the touch screen, settings, and keyboard and discover how to download and use common Apps. This class is based on iOS 7.

Apps for Tablets & Smartphones

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: Apple device (Apple ID), Android device (Google Login information), or Kindle Fire (Amazon account username & password)
Length: 2 hours
Description: Discover a variety of the best Apple and Android apps. You’ll learn best practices for choosing, downloading, and managing your apps. Please bring your fully charged Apple or Android device (with passwords) to class.

Introduction to Facebook

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet skills. For a Facebook Profile: an email account (bring your username and password).
Length: 2 1/2 hours
Description: This class is for Internet users who wish to learn more about the online social networking service, Facebook. Students will set up a personal Facebook profile and then learn how to upload a profile photo, update a status, send a private message, add a friend, and learn about the privacy settings. 

Introduction to LinkedIn

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements:  Mouse, typing, and Internet skills. For a LinkedIn profile: an email account (must know username and password).
Length: 2 Hours
Description: Review the major features of LinkedIn, a web site designed to assist anyone in building their own network of trusted professional contacts. Participants will go through the steps to create their own LinkedIn account. 

Introduction to Skype

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, typing, and Internet skills. For a Skype account: an email account (bring your username and password).
Length: 2 hours
Description: This class is for Internet users who would like to learn more about Skype, a social networking tool. Interested students can establish a personal Skype account. The instructor will demonstrate Skype’s free instant messaging and video call features.

Introduction to Twitter

Skill Level: Advanced
Requirements: Mouse, Typing, and Internet skills. For a Twitter Profile: an email account (bring your username and password).
Length: 2 hours
Description:  Review the major features of Twitter, a social networking and microblogging web site. Students will set up a Twitter profile and learn how to use it.
