TRUSTEES APPROVE NEW POLICY

A newly approved policy means the entrance ramp to the downtown Central Library is now designated as "smoke free." Members of the Library System Board of Trustees amended the current Library Rules of Conduct and Central Library Access Ramp policy at their monthly meeting held in June.

The new policy designates the Central Library entrance ramp, which faces Lafayette Square (Washington Street between William and Clinton Streets) as "Smoke Free" meaning the smoking of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless electronic cigarettes or tobacco products on the entire entrance ramp and no closer than 10 feet to the side of any point of entry to the downtown Library property is strictly prohibited. The 10 foot entryway smoke free policy is also in effect at all Buffalo & Erie County branch public libraries located in the City of Buffalo.

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library serves as a center for information, education and entertainment. Under Article 5, Section 262 of New York State Education Law, the Board of Trustees has adopted the enhanced smoke free policy to ensure an atmosphere conducive to appropriate use of the services and facilities of the Central Library and its eight city branches. Library users are required to comply with these Rules which are posted in each library and on the System website at www.BuffaloLib.org.
