17th ANNUAL BATTLE OF THE BOOKS ANNOUNCED

Community Encouraged to Root for their Library Team

Free, Family-Friendly Event on Saturday, August 1 @ E.C.C. South

Nearly 240 pre-teen and teens representing 21 different Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries will compete in the upcoming Battle of the Books reading trivia competition on Saturday, August 1 at Erie Community College South Campus Gymnasium located at 4041 Southwestern Blvd. in Orchard Park.  The public is invited to show their support by coming out and rooting for their favorite library team during this fast-paced, nail-biting final round competition beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m.  Battle of the Books is free and open to the public.

Battle of the Books, now in its 17th year, pairs participating library teams against one another.  Each team reads the same five preselected books - Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein, The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde, Swindle by Gordon Korman; Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage and Nightmare at the Book Fair by Dan Gutman.  Teams of dedicated young readers, entering sixth through the ninth grade, spend months practicing challenging trivia questions pertaining to each book before the big Battle event.

This summer’s 35 Battle of the Books teams represent the following Libraries:

Amherst Public Library – Main Library at Audubon and Eggertsville Snyder Branch

Boston Free Library

Cheektowaga Public Library - Anna Reinstein Memorial and Julia Boyer Reinstein

City of Tonawanda Public Library

In 2014, for the second year, Clarence Public Library took home the Gold Medal after a victorious lightning round against a dedicated team from the Marilla Free Library.

Battle of the Books is part of the overall New York State Summer Reading initiative – Every Hero Has a Story – taking place at all 37 Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries. Summer Reading focuses on fun activities and programs for school-aged children. They are encouraged to read during the summer months in an effort to advance their academic performance.  Rich Products, National Fuel, The Buffalo News, WGRZ Channel 2, WKSE and WBEN are sponsors of the Library’s 2015 Summer Reading programs.
