The B&ECPL offers positions in librarianship as well as those outside of traditional library service.
Unions
More than 500 individuals (full-time and part-time) are employed in the downtown Central Library and City of Buffalo Branches. Many employees are members in one of three unions:
- Librarians Association
- Civil Service Employee Association (CSEA)
- American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)

The B&ECPL offers a competitive, comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees. The benefits vary depending on the union but each package contains:
Leave Time
Employees receive a generous amount of leave time, including vacation, sick time
and holidays.
Health Insurance
A variety of health insurance options are available. Prescription drug, dental and
vision plans are also provided.
Retirement
The B&ECPL participates in the New York State Employees’ Retirement
System.
There is five-year vesting policy. Staff members also have the choice to participate in a deferred compensation plan.
