BUFFALO AND ERIE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN
POSTER COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS
~ In Conjunction with January 2004 Traveling Exhibit and Events ~
December 3, 2003 - Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library
(B&ECPL), in
cooperation with University at Buffalo Libraries and Just Buffalo Literary
Center, is offering high school students the chance to create their own 21st
century Frankenstein in a Western New York location as part of a special
poster competition this winter.
The B&ECPL and its partners are bringing a dynamic traveling exhibition,
called Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature, to Buffalo in January
2004. The exhibit examines the novel itself, scientific development, moral
responsibilities, Mary Shelley, Frankenstein in popular culture and much more.
To accompany the exhibit, a number of entertaining and informative events are
being planned.
To further generate enthusiasm for this classic novel and its lasting cultural
presence, the B&ECPL is presenting the poster competition. High school
students are asked to create a visual depiction of what a 21st century Frankenstein
would look like and place their creation in a Western New York locale of their
choice.
Students in 9th through 12th grades are eligible. Poster size can be no larger
than 32” by 40”, and any two-dimensional media/materials may be
used. Prizes will be awarded for Best of Show, Best WNY Location and Best Frankenstein
Creation. Entries will be displayed at the Central Library, and winners will
be announced at the exhibit opening on Saturday, January 24, 2004.
The deadline for entries is January 16, 2004. Submission forms are available
online at www.buffalolib.org.
Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature was developed by the National
Library of Medicine in collaboration with the American Library Association.
It has been made possible by major grants from The National Endowment for the
Humanities, Washington D.C., and the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda,
Md.
