BUFFALO AND ERIE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFERS FREE COMPUTER TRAINING WORKSHOPS – February and March

~ New Classes Are Available, Including MultiSearch and Online Small Business Resources ~

January 28, 2004 - Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library (B&ECPL) is offering its winter series of hands-on computer training workshops in the downtown Central Library’s Training Lab. Topics cover computer, World Wide Web and Microsoft basics as well as B&ECPL online resources and special online interests. All classes are free and open to library patrons with a borrower card in good standing.

COMPUTER BASICS
Meet the Mouse…and Keyboard – Improve your mouse and keyboard skills through a guided practice session and introduction to Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor software. Designed for those who have little or no computer experience. A session will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24 and Monday, March 22.

Click Here for Computer Basics – Learn and practice the basics of using a computer, mouse and keyboard. Become more familiar with the Windows operating system and its features. Classes will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Monday, February 23 and Tuesday, March 23 as well as from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 25.

Resume Maker – Learn how to use Resume Maker software to obtain job and salary information, create resumes and cover letters, practice interview techniques and more. A session will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 26.

WORLD WIDE WEB BASICS
Internet I – Acquire basic skills to browse and search the World Wide Web and become familiar with basic Internet concepts. Designed for people with basic mouse and keyboard skills. Sessions will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25 and from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Monday, March 22.

Internet II – Expand your Web expertise by learning more search and evaluation tips as well as how to print and save Web pages. Designed for those who have completed Internet I. Sessions will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25 and from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24.

You’ve Got Mail! Basics – Keep in touch with family and friends by learning how to sign up for a free Web e-mail account and use its basic functions. Designed for people with basic mouse, keyboard and Internet skills. A class will be offered on Thursday, February 26 from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m.

You’ve Got Mail! Advanced – Continue to learn more about Yahoo! Mail as you discover how to create folders, signature files, filter mail and block junk mail with filters. Designed for people who have completed You’ve Got Mail! Basics. A class will be offered on Friday, March 26 from 2 to 4:15 p.m.

MICROSOFT BASICS
Introduction to Microsoft Word – Create a letter, invitation or resume by learning how to enter text, add simple formatting and save and print a document. Designed for people with basic mouse and keyboard skills. Sessions will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Monday, February 23 and Tuesday, March 23 as well as from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Friday, February 27.

Intermediate Word – Acquire more skills to assist you in formatting a document, including setting margins as well as inserting page numbers, bullets, lists and clip art. Designed for people with basic Microsoft Word skills. Sessions will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 26 and from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel – Learn the basics of this popular spreadsheet program, including entering information, creating a simple formula and changing the appearance of a spreadsheet. Designed for people with basic mouse and keyboard skills. Sessions will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Friday, February 27 and from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 25 p.m.

Intermediate Microsoft Excel – Create basic formulas, charts and databases and understand how to sort and filter data along with formatting and editing techniques. Designed for people who have completed the Introduction to Microsoft Excel class. A session will be offered on Saturday, March 27 from 2 to 4:15 p.m.

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint – Create professional and appealing presentations by learning how to create slides with text and graphics. Designed for people with basic mouse and keyboard skills. A session will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24 and from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Friday, March 26.

Introduction to Microsoft Publisher– Learn how to create flyers, newsletters and other printed materials. This workshop is for people with basic mouse and keyboard skills. A session will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 28.

Creating and Sending Electronic Greeting Cards – Learn to create personalized greeting cards using Microsoft Publisher and how to send electronic greeting cards through email. Discover e-card websites. The session will be offered from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 27.

B&ECPL ONLINE RESOURCES
MultiSearch: B&ECPL Catalog and Databases – Learn to search for information from the Library Catalog, B&ECPL databases and selected websites with a single search. A session will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24.

SPECIAL ONLINE INTERESTS
The following class is designed for people with basic mouse, keyboard and Internet skills.

The Useful Web: Online Small Business Resources – Discover useful information on starting or running a business using online resources and library databases. Learn how to write business and marketing plans, manage money and human resources, find tax and legal forms and how to contact helpful agencies geared to assist the small business owner. The session will be offered from 2 to 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, February 28.

Pre-registration is required for all workshops and can be done in person at the Central Library Circulation Services or by calling 858-7132, Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are not accepted more than one month prior to the class date. In order to facilitate greater access to public training sessions, individuals may only register two times per individual workshop. Visit www.buffalolib.org for further information.
