CENTRAL LIBRARY NOW OFFERS NYS VITAL RECORDS INDEX

~ Index Encompasses NYS Births, Marriages and Deaths ~

May 27, 2004 - Buffalo , NY -- The Central Library was approved by the New York State Department of Health and New York State Archives to provide access to a copy of the New York State Vital Records Index on microfiche. This index encompasses births, marriages and deaths that occurred in New York State as early as 1880 and as recent as 1954 for marriages and deaths and 1929 for births.

“The New York State Vital Records Index is an incredibly valuable tool for genealogists and other researchers,” said B&ECPL Librarian Amy Pickard . “We have already had visitors from Virginia , Florida , Iowa and Missouri use the index, and these genealogical researchers have been thrilled to find a convenient location with this source.”

The index provides the name, date and place of birth, marriage or death recorded. It does not contain the actual birth, marriage or death certificates. Those requiring actual copies of these certificates need to apply to the original issuing and/or recording agencies, such as the town, city or state.

The index is accessible in the Central Library's Grosvenor Room, located on the first floor, during regular library hours. New York State requires that the index be used in the library. Users must provide valid identification, and no reproduction (printing or photocopying) of the information is permitted.

For more information, call (716) 858-8900.
