BUFFALO AND ERIE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY TO INTRODUCE TELEPHONE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

~ Notices Delivered by U.S. Mail to be Discontinued ~

______________________________________________________________________________

Buffalo , NY -- The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library (B&ECPL) will introduce a telephone notification system this spring. To inform patrons of overdue and request items, the B&ECPL currently offers e-mail notification or paper notices sent through U.S. mail. To address postage costs, the B&ECPL will discontinue paper notices. Patrons will have the choice between receiving information through their e-mail account or by the new automated telephone system.

“In light of recent budget cuts, the B&ECPL is evaluating and implementing a number of proactive cost-reduction and revenue generating initiatives,” said B&ECPL Director Michael C. Mahaney. “Currently, postage expenses for distributing overdue and request item notices through the U.S. mail total nearly $100,000 annually. By offering more cost-effective methods with e-mail and telephone notification, monies can be better utilized in providing services to our community.”

The B&ECPL is encouraging all cardholders to visit their local library to select their preferred notification method and provide updated information as soon as possible. An online registration form is also available at www.buffalolib.org.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System, comprised of the Central Library, 15 city branches, 36 contract library facilities and mobile and outreach services, is dedicated to enriching Erie County's diverse communities through library resources that enrich, enlighten and entertain.
