PRESS RELEASESCENTRAL LIBRARY HOSTS AN AUTHOR VISIT WITH JULIE M. FENSTER, AUTHOR OF RACE OF THE CENTURY: THE HEROIC TRUE STORY OF THE 1908 NEW YORK TO PARIS AUTO RACE – JUNE 7, 2005______________________________________________________________________________ Buffalo , NY --- The downtown Central Library is hosting an author visit from award-winning writer and historian Julie M. Fenster on June 7 th at 12:00 pm in the West Room. Ms. Fenster will give a short talk on her book Race of the Century: The Heroic True Story of the 1908 New York to Paris Auto Race and the research she did at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. A book sale and signing will follow the presentation. Race of the Century: The Heroic True Story of the 1908 New York to Paris Auto Race is an epic adventure about this historic race, and its two amateur heroes, Buffalo mechanic George Schuster, who drove the Buffalo-made Thomas Flyer automobile, and German aristocrat Hans Koeppen. Ms. Fenster conducted research for her book at the B&ECPL, which coincidentally has just unveiled its first digital exhibit highlighting the New York to Paris race, a proud, but often unknown part of Buffalo 's past and transportation history. Julie M. Fenster is an author and historian who began her career at Automobile Quarterly , where her book Packard: The Pride won the Best Book award from the National Automotive Journalism Conference. The author of six additional books on a wide range of historical topics, she has written for American Heritage, the New York Times , and American History . Her previous book, Ether Day: The Strange Tale of America's Greatest Medical Discovery and the Haunted Men Who Made It, received the Anesthesia Foundation Award for best book of 2001. Ms. Fenster lives in upstate New York , where she drives her sports car on roads that trace the route of the 1908 New York to Paris Auto Race.
