The Ring of Knowledge is a unique and beautiful glass sculpture located in the main floor of the Central Library and is a centerpiece in the library's display and programming area. Commissioned by the Grosvenor Society in 1993 and designed by Howard Ben Tre', the sculpture consists of five, glass benches arranged in a circle. Each of the five components represents an individual element or creative energy found in nature: fire, water, void, ground and wind.

The display area features visually appealing, entertaining and educational exhibits that are changed three to four times a year and highlight Library services, collections, special events, observances and/or community-related activities. Books on the display's theme are available for circulation. The Ring of Knowledge also hosts events throughout the year, such as author visits, panel discussions, book talks and children's programming. Check out the Central Library's current events.

Now On Display: The Big Read... Unlock the Mystery of the Falcon
The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (B&ECPL) in conjunction with Just Buffalo Literary Center, is one of 208 libraries, municipalities, and arts, culture, higher education, and science organizations to receive a grant to host The Big Read from September 2008-June 2009. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read in WNY will focus on The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett with activities taking place during the months of September, October and November.
