Terms of Access
Terms of access help ensure the safety of the Library's valuable and unique materials as well as protect patrons' access to the resources.
Sign-in - All visitors are required to sign in at the entrance to the Grosvenor Room.
Bag Check - Bags, carrying cases, and containers must be placed in library-provided storage drawers for the duration of your visit. Items from your bag may be carried with you. The cabinet does not lock, therefore traveling light and leaving valuables at home is recommended. Access to your stored belongings is available at all times. A modest-sized purse may be kept with you while you research.
Food and Drink - In order to protect the collections, no food or beverages are allowed in the Grosvenor Room.
Borrowing Materials - Most materials do not circulate and must be used in the Grosvenor Room. The exception is a portion of the music score collection, LP records, and cassettes.
Materials Reproduction
Photocopying - Photocopying materials for personal use is permitted, depending on the condition of the item. Paper sizes available include 8.5 x 11, 8.5 x 14, and 11 x 17.
Other means of reproduction including, but not limited to, photographing and scanning require special permission. Please see reproduction services information for more details.
U.S. Copyright Law - Adherence to and interpretation of U.S. Copyright Law is the user's responsibility.
Rare Book Room Use
Because of the nature of the rare book collection, separate policies pertain to it. Patrons are subject to the Grosvenor Room terms of access with the following additions:
Collection Access
Appointments Necessary - For security reasons, the collections in the Rare Book Room are stored in carefully controlled nonpublic areas of the building and are not readily available for viewing or browsing. Researchers are asked to make an appointment to view its materials. The Library requests that an appointment be made at least one business day in advance by calling 716-858-8900 and asking for the Rare Book Room. Please have the item title and/or call number ready when contacting us.
Materials Viewing - Rare Book Room materials are examined in the Rare Book Viewing Room with a library staff member present. The viewing area is in the main section of the Grosvenor Room. Check-in at the Reference Desk when you arrive for your appointment.
Identification - All patrons must sign the Rare Book Room register. Additionally, proof of identification must be shown, such as a B&ECPL library card, driver's license, or other state issued identification.
Note-taking - Pencils and laptop computers may be used to take notes.
Handling Materials - Patrons may be required to wear gloves or wash their hands before handling Rare Book Room materials.
Rare Book Room Reproduction Guidelines
Reproduction of materials is at the discretion of the Rare Book Librarian. Condition of materials may prohibit reproduction. All photocopying is undertaken by the Library staff and is done as time permits. As photocopies may not be available on demand, every attempt will be made to fill orders quickly. |
