During tax season (late January - April), various libraries in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System may provide basic tax forms.  Forms that libraries do not have can be printed out for a fee.  Please note that library staff does not give tax advice and the following links are a guide to information.  Please consult a tax office or tax preparer for questions.

Where to mail New York State Personal Income Tax Returns

Order NYS forms via automated telephone service 518-457-5431. 
Forms take up to 2 weeks for delivery and you can order up to 5 forms. Please note that delivery time and amount of forms that you are able to order may vary depending on call volume and form availability.

Tax Help at Local Libraries in 2018

Central Library
The New York State Dept. of Taxation and Finance will offer 2-hour instructional sessions and assistance on filing federal and state tax forms. Sessions are held on the following Thursdays: February 1, 8, and 22; March 22 and 29; April 5 and 12. Classes are available at 10 AM to 12 noon, 1 PM to 3 PM, and 4 PM to 6 PM. Registration is required. Call 858-8900 to register.

Clarence Library
AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance 11 AM to 3:30 PM in February on these dates: 1-3, 7-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28. No pre-registration required. First come, first served. Please bring your 2016 tax return, 2017 records, your Social Security card, and a photo ID.

Eggertsville-Snyder Library (Walk-ins only - Please follow link for more details about what to bring)

Kenmore Library
AARP will provide free tax assistance for adults from 10AM to 2 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays from February 5, 2018 - April 11, 2018. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the door by 8:00 AM. Individuals will be seen in order on the list. The library will be closed on February 19, 2018 for President's Day. Please call the library at 873-2842 for more information.

Merriweather Library
VITA: Volunteer Income Tax Preparation will provide free tax preparation of State and Federal Tax Returns on a first come first serve basis on Saturdays, February 10 through April 14 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM. This program is sponsored by the Internal Tax Revenue Service. For more information contact Cheryl Pellam at 716-429-6509.

Riverside Library
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will provide free tax assistance on Thursdays, 2 PM to 6 PM from February 1st through April 12th. By appointment only. Please call 2-1-1 to make an appointment.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program provides free tax counseling for low–to moderate–income taxpayers - especially those 50 and older. Use the free online locator to find the AARP Tax-Aide site nearest you.

 IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Tax Assistance in Cattaraugus County
Free tax help available through Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program was created to provide FREE tax assistance to area seniors, but is open to anyone else in the Cattaraugus County community who is in need.

UB School of Management - 2018 Free Tax Preparation
IRS-certified students from the UB School of Management will again provide free tax preparation services to individuals and families with annual incomes below $54,000.  The service is provided by the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program with volunteers from the UB chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honors organization for accounting and finance students, with help from the UB Accounting Association.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are your source for personal tax help when you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, and you want face-to-face assistance.  To locate the nearest Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, call 1-800-906-9887.

New State Department of Taxation and Finance - Contact Information
Tax offices no longer offer walk-in services.  However, the website provides an answer center, telephone numbers, a mailing address, and a link to check income tax refund status.

This department deals with city property tax, sewer rent bills, local assessment bills, tax sale certificates, and other tax notices.

Erie County Department of Real Property Tax Services
Contains tax rate history, auction & foreclosure information, forms, public notices, general tax & assessment information, and you can pay property taxes online.
