B&ECPL Director Bridget Quinn-Carey gives her second annual public State of the Library Address in the Central Library's Ring of Knowledge. In her address, she discusses her time as the Director of the System, noting the successes, challenges and activities of the past year; and also provides a glimpse into, and some predictions about, the years ahead.

May 14, 2009: Richard Brookhiser

Presented as part of the B&ECPL’s Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America program series, this edition features Richard Brookhiser, Alexander Hamilton biographer and author of Alexander Hamilton, American. A native of Rochester, NY and a graduate of Yale University, Brookhiser was the curator of the New-York Historical Society’s original exhibit Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America and also wrote and hosted the PBS program “Rediscovering George Washington.”

October 31, 2008: Laura Pedersen

Presented as part of the B&ECPL’s Meet The Author Lunchtime Library Series in conjunction with WBFO-FM, this edition features Buffalo born Laura Pedersen, author of Buffalo Gal. Having grown up in the snowlblower city of Buffalo, NY, Pedersen knew how to beat the odds by high school graduation and was well prepared to seek her fortune on Wall Street, becoming the youngest person to have a seat on the American Stock Exchange and a millionaire by age 21. Combining laugh-out-loud humor with a slice of social history her hometown, which was a flash point for race riots, antiwar protests, and abortion rallies, not to mention bingo, bowling, and Friday night fish fries, Pedersen paints a vivid portrait of an era.

August 22, 2008: Kenneth R. Miller

Presented as part of the B&ECPL’s Meet The Author Lunchtime Library Series in conjunction with WBFO-FM, this edition features Kenneth R. Miller, author of Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul. At the dawn of the twenty- first century, the debate over Darwin's theory of evolution is nearly as contentious as it was in the notorious Scopes trial a century ago. Today, however, people who believe that evolution is "only a theory" have put their hopes in a concept known as Intelligent Design. In Only a Theory, Kenneth Miller dissects the claims of the ID movement in the same incisive style that marked his testimony as an expert witness in Pennsylvania's landmark 2005 Dover evolution trial.
