Know the Background
Home of the original, handwritten manuscript of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library (B&ECPL) has a long history with the writings of Mark Twain. Continuing in this tradition, the B&ECPL announced on March 1st the complete details of its Mark Twain Writing Competition "A Murder, a Mystery and a Marriage," which encouraged writers and Twain enthusiasts from around the world to collaborate with the great Mark Twain by composing a conclusion to the famous author's first two chapters of the short story.

More than 700 entrants from around the world submitted entries by the June 25th deadline. What is even more remarkable is the geographic scope from which theses entries were received. There was representation from 38 different states and every Canadian province as well as other countries across the globe, including Australia, England, Japan, Brazil, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa and the Philippines.

Graduate students from the State University of New York at Buffalo completed initial screenings of entries. Read what they had to say. The top 10 entries from each category were then forwarded to the final judging panel members who have selected the top three winners. Cash prizes of $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place will be awarded in the international category (14 and older). The competition for young writers (14 to 18) will award prizes in the amount of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place, with both local (Erie County) and international divisions.

The entries received attest to the public’s continued admiration of Twain and the tremendous excitement his name generates. Thank you to all who entered for their interest and hard work!
