The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, in collaboration with the Hispanic Heritage Council of WNY, is sponsoring “Bring Us Your History! Day” on Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Niagara Branch Library, 280 Porter Avenue at Niagara Street, Buffalo. This event is free and open to the public.

The WNY Hispanic community is urged to bring in photographs, documents, scrapbooks, and other items documenting their family’s history, ancestors and stories of migration that brought them to WNY, and their lives, occupations, celebrations, and communities here. These items will be reviewed, photographed or scanned for possible inclusion in a digital Hispanic Heritage archive that will be housed at the Downtown Central Library and eventually available to the public. All items will be returned to their owners during the March 12 event.

“We have been collaborating with the Hispanic Heritage Council of WNY for the past several years to bring awareness to the culture and traditions of Hispanic people in our community through activities like the annual Kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month in September and now the archive project,” said Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. “This event aims to help uncover new stories, photographs and materials that people may have in their attics or personal collections and preserve them via digital technology for the future. We want to help share these stories and items as part of the larger community’s collective memory.”

Further information about the archive project will be available at the event. Refreshments will be provided.

“Bring Us Your History! Day” is supported in part and made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association as part of its national program Latino Americans: 500 Years of History.
