16th Annual Battle of the Books Announced
Community Encouraged to Root for their Library Team
Free, Family Friendly, Event on Saturday, August 2 at E.C.C. South

Nearly 200 pre-teen and teens representing 17 different Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries will compete in the upcoming Battle of the Books competition on Saturday, August 2 at Erie Community College South Campus.  The public is invited to show their support by coming out and rooting for their favorite library team during this fast-paced, nail-biting final round competition beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. Battle of the Books is free and open to the public and the teams are made up of dedicated young readers entering sixth through the ninth grades in September.

Battle of the Books, now in its 16th year, pairs participating library teams against one another. Each team reads the same five preselected books – The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone; Into the Wild (Warriors Book 1) by Erin Hunter;  Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos;  Peak by Roland Smith; and The White Giraffe by Lauren St. John, which was selected as this year’s Kids’ Choice winning title.  Teams spend months practicing challenging trivia questions pertaining to each book before the big Battle event.

This summer’s 31 Battle of the Books teams represent the following Libraries:

Amherst Public Library

Boston Free Library

Cheektowaga Public Library

Clarence Public Library

Eden Library

Elma Public Library

Grand Island Memorial Library

Hamburg Public Library

Lackawanna Public Library

Lancaster Public Library

Marilla Free Library

Last year, Clarence Public Library took home the Gold Medal after competing in a fast-paced lightning round before 500 fans.   In 2012, Marilla Free Library beat out all of the other teams.  Battle of the Books is part of the overall New York State Summer Reading initiative - Fizz! Boom! Read!  - taking place at all 37 Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries.  Summer Reading focuses on fun activities and programs for school age children.  They are encouraged to read during the summer months in an effort to advance their academic performance.  The Buffalo Sabres Foundation, The Buffalo News, Rich Products, National Fuel, WGRZ TV Channel 2 and Holland Speedway are sponsors of the Library’s 2014 Summer Reading programs.  For more information call 858-8900 or visit the Library System’s website www.BuffaloLib.org or, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
