Teams Forming for the 15th Annual Battle of the Books Competition
Sixth – Ninth Graders Who Enjoy Reading Encouraged to Participate

The Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries are seeking young people who enjoy reading to participate in the Annual Battle of the Books competition. Children who are entering sixth through the ninth grades in September 2013 are eligible to participate and should contact their local Buffalo & Erie County Public Library or call 858-8900 for details about this free, fun and exciting team activity.

Now in its 15th year, Battle of the Books pairs participating library teams comprised of members who have each read five preselected books. The teams spend months practicing challenging trivia questions pertaining to each book.   On Saturday, August 3, all of the Library teams will gather to compete in the free Battle of the Books event at Erie Community College South.  Last year, the Marilla Free Library took the Gold Medal after competing against 32 teams in a fast-paced lightning round before 500 fans.

Battle of the Books is part of the overall Summer Reading initiative run by the 37-site Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System where school age children are encouraged to read during the summer months in an effort to advance their academic performance.  Libraries offer dozens of engaging programs for children, teens and adults in reading and reading-related activities such as Battle of the Books.

The Buffalo News and Rich Products are sponsors of the Library’s 2013 Summer Reading programs.

The 2013 Battle of the Books titles are:

Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to Not Reading by Tom Greenwald

 Hero by Mike Lupica

Juniper Berry: A Tale of Terror & Temptation by M.P. Kozlowsky

 Savvy by Ingrid Law

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which was selected as the Kid’s Choice winning title.
