Battle of the Books Winners

Lancaster Public Library WINS 2015 Battle of the Books Reading Competition
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Program featuring Hundreds of Pre-Teen & Teenage Readers

Lancaster Public Library took home the Gold in the 2015 Battle of the Books teen reading completion presented by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System.  The event took place at ECC South last week.

Members of winning Lancaster Public Library team:

Schevenska Caburao - 7th grade in September;

Korissa Gozdziak - 9th grade in September;

Katelyn Laistner - 7th grade in September;

Sabrina Lewis - 7th grade in September;

Sophie Szentgyorgyi -7th grade in September; and

Beth Wrotney - 8th grade in September.

The Lancaster Team was coached by Gwen Cassidy, youth services librarian at Lancaster Public Library, Donna Rayno and Taylor Watson.

The runner-up team was from Marilla Free Library.  There were a total of 33 teams, representing 20 different Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries with nearly 240 participants and an audience of 500 in attendance. This was the 17th annual Battle of the Books. Team members, comprised of dedicated young readers, entering sixth through the ninth grade, spend months practicing challenging trivia questions pertaining to the same five preselected books before the big Battle event which plays out live in the ECC gymnasium in front of hundreds of supportive family and friends.

2015 books were:
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein;
The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde;
Swindle by Gordon Korman;
Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage; and
Nightmare at the Book Fair by Dan Gutman. 

This summer’s 33 Battle of the Books teams represented the following Libraries:

 Amherst Public Library – Main Library at Audubon and Eggertsville-Snyder Branch

Cheektowaga Public Library - Anna Reinstein Memorial and Julia Boyer Reinstein

City of Tonawanda Public Library

Battle of the Books is part of the overall New York State Summer Reading initiative – Every Hero Has a Story – taking place at all 37 Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries.  Summer Reading focuses on fun activities, entertainment and programs for school-aged children. They are encouraged to read during the summer months in an effort to advance their academic performance.
