Mary Jean Jakubowski Reappointed Library System Director

Trustees Approve a Three Year Term

The Board of Trustees of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System today reappointed Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski to another three-year term.  She has held the position of director since 2011.  Ms. Jakubowski is a 22-year veteran of the local Public Library System, having worked in various capacities, including as chief operating officer, deputy director of human resources, and librarian. 

System Board Chair Jack Connors said, “We are proud to have Mary Jean Jakubowski as director because she serves the entire community.  She is a strong, dedicated, and creative leader who is totally committed, as well as fully immersed in the workings of our great Library System.”

In 2012, Ms. Jakubowski was appointed to the New York State Regents Advisory Committee on Libraries.  She is a member of the American Library Association, Public Library Association, New York State Library Association, Public Library Systems Directors Organization and the New York State Association of Library Systems.  Locally, Mary Jean sits on the WNY STEM Hub Steering Committee and has served on the Western New York Library Resources Council since 2009, including as President in 2011.  She also served on the Board of Trustees at Explore & More Children’s Museum.  In 2013 and 2014, Mary Jean was named one of “Western New York’s Most Influential People” and in 2012 she was honored as a “Woman of Influence” by Business First of Buffalo.  

Prior to joining the Library in 1992, Ms. Jakubowski spent 13 years in the healthcare industry.  She resides in Lancaster with her husband Larry and two daughters.
