What is Interlibrary Loan?

Books, articles, music CDs or DVDs not owned by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System can be requested from library systems across New York State and beyond.  Interlibrary Loan services manages these requests for you.

In most cases the items you need/want will be lent to you for free or for a small fee. Call or email us to learn more.

Items Interlibrary Loan services can request

  • Books
  • Audio Books on CD
  • Music on CD
  • DVDs 
  • Individual articles or book chapters
  • Microfilm

*Some restrictions apply  

Items Interlibrary Loan services cannot request

  • Popular book titles published in the current year
  • DVDs - TV series or other multidisk works
  • eBooks
  • Rare books
  • Reference books
  • Entire magazine/ journal issues

B&ECPL reserves the right to refuse to accept photocopy requests when it is believed that fulfillment of the order would result in a violation of copyright law.
