SUMMARY

The true story of Trump's rise to the top--and the truth behind the deals he described in The Art of the Deal--is told for the first time by Village Voice reporter Barrett, who has been following the Trump story for nearly a decade. Photographs.

Review by Booklist Review

Most of what we've read about Donald Trump has previously come from gossipmongers, his well-oiled PR machinery, or his own self-adulatory hand. Now Barrett, a staff writer for the Village Voice for more than a decade, provides an authoritative and definitive--and, it is hoped, the last--word on Trump. The author has already collaborated with Jack Newfield to savage Ed Koch and his disgraced last term as mayor of New York in City for Sale (Harper, 1988). Trump is not one to shun a spotlight, but he does not hold up well under Barrett's withering investigative glare. Barrett portrays a petty, power-driven egomaniac who will stoop to any level to get what he wants. For example, Barrett goes well beyond the tabloid headlines to suggest that Trump's affair with Marla Maples was part of a plan to attract southern votes in a possible presidential election bid--a campaign that was not unlike Trump Air in its failure to take off. Barrett thoroughly chronicles the rise and fall of Donald Trump, detailing the deals, the drive, and the decadence. Given the public's current appetite for scandal, this book should do quite well. ~--David Rouse
